Case Studies
Here are some of the stories from past projects we have worked on. You will see that we work with a variety of industries and what our skillset includes.
Spin Doctor
Client: Fortune 500 medical device company
Service Provided: Private Cloud
A cutting-edge, Fortune 500 medical device company that relies on the latest technology wanted us to host their test environments. They were impressed with how quickly we could spin up a virtual test servers!
A Bumper Crop
Heartland Crop Insurance
Service Provided: Private Cloud
Heartland Crop Insurance had been leasing the software that runs their business. They decided it was time to have custom-built applications for their company. To enable greater collaboration, they wanted to develop in the cloud.
Wayfinder IT Solutions initially set up a resource pool to accommodate a 20 VM development environment. We then set up Test, Staging, and Production environments. Total VM's exceeded 300. Wayfinder IT Solutions' engineers assisted in new software deployments and monitored the environments.
Once Heartland was in production, we replicated all production VMs to a full failover environment. The custom applications and Wayfinder IT Solutions technology were the primary reasons Heartland Crop Insurance was sold to a $22 billion reinsurance company.
The Power Maybe Out, but We Still Have Access!
SagesS3
Service Provided: Physical to Virtual (P2V)
SagesS3 had an internal server running their ERP system. But they had a problem. Their building had frequent power outages, so internet access was intermittent. As a result, both in-office and remote users were constantly kicked off.
Wayfinder IT Solutions' solution was to set up a virtual server in the MDSI private cloud. MDSI then set up a secure terminal server for each employee to access the VM that hosted the ERP system. Since Mark Data Set this up five years ago, access has never gone down.
Greater Performance in the Cloud
RMC Project Management
Service Provided: Physical to Virtual (P2V)
RMC Project Management sells training materials and classes globally. The production environment at their primary offices was on aging servers and workstation equipment. Wayfinder IT Solutions created virtual servers with greater performance in the MDSI private cloud to host all functions that were running on the RMC physical servers. Over the years, we have consolidated the hosting at other vendors to the Wayfinder IT Solutions private cloud. In addition, Wayfinder IT Solutions provides real-time failover replication of RMC's production servers to Microsoft's Azure. RMC has been a client since 2005.
An Infrastructure Designed for Customer’s Global Locations
Buhler, Inc.
Service Provided: Infrastructure Architecture and Equipment Supply
Buhler, Inc. is a global corporation based in Zurich, Switzerland. They develop software and components that run extensive facilities which produce food and other products such as flowers, spices, nuts, and everyday staples. Buhler products are in your smartphones, solar panels, diapers, lipstick, banknotes, the foods you eat, and the vehicles you drive.
For over two decades, Buhler North America and Buhler offices in other parts of the world have relied on Wayfinder IT Solutions to architect, design, and provide systems for the Buhler software to run at their customer's facilities. Wayfinder IT Solutions developers have provided custom SQL and other software development for Buhler projects.
At a facility in Mexico City, there were power and environmental issues. So, Wayfinder IT Solutions' engineers designed a fully self-contained environment in which the equipment could run. Over the years, Wayfinder IT Solutions has assisted Buhler in standardizing computer and networking systems to help Buhler in its sales process.
Building an Overpass
Fortune 500 medical device company
Service Provided: Infrastructure
A fortune 500 medical device company with vendors throughout the United States was struggling with each vendor's internal networks due to poor design. The challenge was the vendors connecting with the company’s vendor ordering application. The medical device company decided to move this process offsite.
We discovered the infrastructure challenge was that some vendors had over 20 internal hops before the traffic left their network. This resulted in slow and unstable connections.
Wayfinder IT Solutions created a stand-alone solution at the vendor's location. We implemented a dedicated router connected to a 4g wireless hot spot. This allowed Boston Scientific to bypass the vendor's inconsistent networks. We then routed the ordering traffic to the Wayfinder IT Solutions private cloud where the BSC order system resides, securing through specific firewall ports and hosting the order entry system in our private cloud.
Multiple Locations—One Big Success
Tenere
Service Provided: Infrastructure (Layer 1 to Layer 3 Network Rebuild)
Tenere, a manufacturing company with locations in Wisconsin, Colorado, and Mexico, had run out of bandwidth on their networks. As a result, everything from the manufacturing machines, job management software, warehouse management, shipping systems, and front office was attached to the networks that spanned their buildings and locations. Unfortunately, this prevented Tenere from connecting additional equipment to the network, such as security cameras.
Compounding the problem, the internal IT resource quit the project after he had ordered $107,000 of equipment that was on a lease and sitting in boxes.
Tenere reached out to Wayfinder IT Solutions and asked if we could pick up the project. Upon reviewing the project notes, we realized no discovery or design work had been done. For example, no one had mapped out the wireless zones in each building for the new wireless access points. Wayfinder IT Solutions project managers and engineers visited each location to create the physical and logical design work. We then created a statement of work.
For the Wisconsin locations, a Layer 1 infrastructure problem existed. The wiring coming into the building couldn't handle the required bandwidth, and their internal Cat5 wiring was old and not correctly terminated. As a result, Wayfinder IT Solutions personnel brought in 10 Gbit fiber backbone 6 strand connections and rewired seven buildings.
Wayfinder IT Solutions had three teams. One to bring in the 10Gbit 6 strands of fiber and the rewiring of 7 buildings in multiple locations. The second for the physical network that configured and installed the Cisco switches and firewalls. The third team designed, did the wireless mapping, and installed the new wireless network. We completed the project in under four months—ahead of schedule and under budget. Cutover during the last two weeks of December went smoothly per location.
Content Management, Training, and More
RMC Project Management
Service Provided: Custom Software Solutions and Development
RMC Project Management, a company that sells training materials and classes globally, had a vendor rewrite their primary website. The vendor coded it in Laravel PHP.
RMC had weekly marketing changes they needed to make to the website, but they needed a developer to do it every time they wanted to make a change. So, what RMC needed was an accurate content management system.
Wayfinder IT Solutions built a new website in WordPress with a MY SQL database. Wayfinder IT Solutions' personnel then trained RMC's marketing staff to make the required changes themselves.
RMC's Google store shopping cart was built in Magento 1.9. Unfortunately, Magento ceased support of this version after June 30, 2020.
Wayfinder IT Solutions' developers performed the upgrade to Magento 2.3 with a complete rewrite, and our project managers managed the move to production.
Integration and Transformation
Tenere, Inc
Service Provided: Enterprise Software Solutions and Development & Public Cloud
Tenere, Inc is an international manufacturing company based in Wisconsin and Colorado, with manufacturing in the US and Mexico. They had a problem. As a result of acquisitions, Tenere's metals and plastics divisions were on separate ERP systems that were not integrated with Tenere's CRM and other management systems. So, the management team did not have timely and accurate reporting of key business metrics. Instead, they were forced to look at cumbersome, out-of-date Excel spreadsheets.
Wayfinder IT Solutions proposed integrating the data in the two disparate ERP databases in a data warehouse. We brought in a senior business analyst to determine what reporting each business unit and manager required to begin the process. This included data types, date ranges, lookbacks, and data comparisons to name a few.
Wayfinder IT Solutions' personnel used Microsoft's Data Factory to pull the data from each ERP database and mapped the data to a data warehouse in Microsoft Azure. Next, the SAS OLAP Cubes were built to store the data. Then, we created the analysis service layer.
A Wayfinder IT Solutions resource used Microsoft's Power Bi to build the reports and work individually with department heads at Tenere. As a result, the project transformed how Tenere managed its business.
A Better Environment
Allianz
Service Provided: Software Solutions, Development & Private Cloud
A division of Allianz, Allianz Life, was acquiring Questar Capital Corp. Allianz's due diligence uncovered the Questar IT environment did not meet Allianz's internal IT standards and therefore, the Questar website and other applications needed to be hosted in a virtual environment outside of Allianz during the re-write of the new Allianz Life/Questar internal website. Wayfinder IT Solutions was a pioneer in cloud environments at this time and was chosen for the project. Wayfinder IT Solutions personnel attended weekly meetings with the Allianz team to determine the weekly updates to the Questar site and to provide input. The total project duration was 22 months and incredible success.
Making an Efficient Team
Rubric Legal
Service Provided: Microsoft 365
Rubric Legal, a law firm in Minneapolis, used three different platforms for email, video conferencing, and phones. They used Gmail, Skype/Zoom, and Vonage leased phone hardware and services. Wayfinder IT Solutions suggested consolidating all their communication needs onto one platform—Microsoft 365.
We began with their email environment. After choosing the correct licensing level for each user, Wayfinder IT Solutions migrated each email box address and its data to a 365 mailbox for each user. We then set up One Drive and Teams for each user's 365 license and trained the user on how to use Teams for meetings and file sharing.
Next, Wayfinder IT Solutions set up Teams voice for the law firm. First, we ported over all the law firm's users, numbers, and voice mailboxes. Then, after consulting with each user and the law firm's partners, we recommended and set up each user's Teams phone system along with the reception and conference room phones. The final step was setting up the Teams voice auto attendant and routing. For this client, migrating to Teams Voice saved the firm $2700/month!
Securing an Aging System
$30 Million company with ~60 users, Inbound and Outbound Marketing
Service Provided: Microsoft 365 (Microsoft SharePoint)
A client had an aging file server. Wayfinder IT Solutions proposed and developed a secure SharePoint environment that held each division of the companies files and data. For example, Accounting and Marketing. We then set up the proper security for each area so only authorized personnel could access the folders in a specific department of the company.
